It is the Great War, a time in history when little industrial work was offered in the country areas of Britain and in this story, the Fens. They survived in a farming economy. With the outcome of the war men and boys were taken from their rural homes and moved, together in some instances with their horses, to a war time footing. This story covers the experiences of a village and its population through this traumatic period. The Dexter family at the centre of the story are drawn into a vortex of passion and pain which ultimately affects not only the boundaries of the rural idyl but stretches to the mud sodden trenches of France and further to include the Empire.
